Maha Shivaratri

Maha Shivaratri, one of the most sacred Hindu festivals, is celebrated with great devotion and spiritual fervor in Rameswaram, the land of Lord Shiva. The Arulmigu Ramanathaswamy Temple, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, becomes the focal point of grand celebrations that attract thousands of devotees from across India.

The festival marks the divine union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Devotees observe fasting, perform Rudrabhishekam (holy bathing of the Shiva Lingam) with milk, honey, and sacred water, and chant “Om Namah Shivaya” throughout the night. The temple glows beautifully with oil lamps, flowers, and decorations, creating a divine and serene atmosphere.

Special pujas, bhajans, and cultural programs are organized all night, symbolizing the triumph of light over darkness and devotion over ignorance. Pilgrims also take a holy dip in the Agni Theertham before entering the temple, seeking blessings for spiritual growth and prosperity.

Maha Shivaratri in Rameswaram is not just a festival — it’s a deeply moving spiritual experience that connects every devotee to the eternal power of Lord Shiva.
